Today I googled "What do parents want to know?" An article appeared titled "The 5 Words All Parents Want To Hear". I instinctively knew what those words were. I knew because they are words that matter to me. They are of course..."You're doing a great job!"
Do people say it to you? I hope they do. Because parenting can be so hard and we all need encouragement.
We all want to raise good kids. Polite kids. Strong kids. Healthy kids. But chances are our kids won't be all of these things simultaneously. There are times when kids have meltdowns, will only eat chicken nuggets, struggle with friendships, fail maths, or be in and out of the doctors clinic. Thanks to the comparison game that the world encourages, these things can make us doubt ourselves as parents. But these things should not really define whether or not you're doing a great job. So here's a thought...don't judge yourself on their standards!
If you are trying to lead your family with God at the center you get to head to the Bible for back up! The Bible is quite clear that the ways of the world are not a great standard for us to adhere to. It's clear in Proverbs 29:25 where is says "It is dangerous to be concerned with what others think of you, but if you trust the Lord, you are safe."
So draw a line in the sand now. If you feel like the world is telling you that you are failing, write down that scripture above and claim your safety. It's yours to take.
But you know what else? I just gotta say that if you're engaged enough in your parenting to be reading this post....
YOU'RE DOING A GREAT JOB!
(Stay tuned for Part 2 of this post where we dig a little deeper into HOW!)
